Understanding What Your MCB Is Telling You
A Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) is designed with one primary goal: to protect your home wiring and appliances from melting, overheating, or catching fire due to electrical faults. When an MCB trips repeatedly, treating the symptom by simply flipping it back on is dangerous.
The Two Main Culprits Behind Tripping
- Circuit Overload: Too many high-power appliances (geyser, microwave, iron, AC) operating concurrently on the same electrical line beyond the rated amperage (e.g. 16A).
- Short Circuit: A loose or damaged wire where live and neutral touch directly, generating a sudden surge of excessive current.
- Ground Fault: Current leaking into the earthing wire, often caused by moisture inside outdoor switchboards.
Step-by-Step Diagnostic Method
- Unplug all appliances connected to the affected room or circuit.
- Reset the MCB switch to the ON position.
- Plug in appliances one by one. If plugging in a specific appliance immediately trips the breaker, that device has an internal short circuit.
- If the breaker trips even with zero appliances plugged in, the fault lies within the concealed wall wiring or the breaker itself is fatigued.
